Budget Fast Food: From Dean and Deluca

Izzy and I were out in the city today. He has the week off from school so we have things to do, places to go..After a day of appointments and fun I realized I had nothing waiting at home for dinner. I knew we weren't far from Dean and Deluca and hoped to pick up something quick and not too expensive. That does seem implausible yet..

I wandered around the store gazing upon overpriced delicacies of all kinds, when I honed in upon the rotisserie chicken..It was only $10.50, which is not that much more then I would pay elsewhere for a similar organic chicken. I bought that along with a bunch of organic broccoli for $4..Would it have been that much less elsewhere? Not necessarily.

I got home; put the chicken in the oven to warm and whipped up some olive oil smashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. Voila, a decent dinner in under 30 minutes. The miracle was that it only cost about $16.00 and we had leftovers.

I had to ponder, why do people go to fast food restaurants for unhealthy food when they can eat things like this instead? How much would dinner for three be at McDonald's?

I know what you mean; we don't have D&D here in Pittsburgh, but I have often made similar meals with a Whole Foods roast chicken - theirs are $8.99 - and think that at least people can do that! I haven't eaten McDonald's in 15 years, but I admit that once in awhile we still order pizza. When we do and it takes 45 minutes to arrive I think, why didn't you open the pantry, get out the artichoke hearts, canned tomatoes, or SOMETHING, and just make omelettes?! Or a quick pasta dish? There's almost always an alternative to takeout that winds up being quicker, less expensive, and healthier.

Rebecca: So true..but even for me sometimes sheer laziness takes over and nothing can beat delivery (If it is quick and tasty, that is!)

I dont' get it either. Even a box of pasta and a jar of Ragu is cheaper, and probably easier, than a trip to MickieD's. I think America has been brainwashed... It's sad, and frustrating.

I agree with you. 16.00 for a meal for a family of three with leftovers is pretty good. I think fast food might cost even more than that. Sadly, people are not aware of the unhealthiness of fast food.

Shauna: What do you eat for "Fast Food", especially since you are vegetarian?
